Large, gridded datasets present a series of interesting problems when it comes to creating visualization on the client (size, speed, time, etc). Recently there have been several great examples of how to explore such data in modern mapping frameworks, and we’d like to breakdown the current state of the art.
This talk will discuss the technical details of creating visualizations like http://earth.nullschool.net/ and why / how that code was re-purposed into http://esri.github.io/wind-js/.
We’ll present the pitfalls of the current implementation and talk about how recent advancements in web-mapping (aka vector tiles) can be used to build light-weight visualizations and client-side data analyses.
