First a big thank you to the many existing sponsors. Sponsors make FOSS4G possible.

Late call for FOSS4G sponsorship

As we build momentum for September, we have one last chance for sponsors to join in supporting the FOSS4G* conference. We hope that you will join us as a sponsor. After August 15th, we will no longer be able to include new sponsors in printed materials, so this is your last chance to connect with attendees.

FOSS4G will be packed with exciting content and dynamic people. We have three engaging keynote speakers — Mike Bostock of d3.js fame, Sarah Novotny of Nginix, and Al Shaw of ProPublica. The conference also features more than 40 workshops, and three packed days of presentations, with presenters representing 20 different countries.

We’d love for you to be part of our conference and our community.

Why FOSS4G, and why 2014?

  • FOSS4G is the largest global gathering focused on open source geospatial software, with an expected audience of 750-1,000 attendees from more than 40 countries.
  • Our attendees include developers, users, decision-makers and observers from a broad spectrum of organizations and fields of operation.
  • If your goal is to connect with people in the geospatial realm, FOSS4G is a unique opportunity. With its attractive combination of culture and nature, Portland is an appealing conference venue attracting a strong domestic and international audience.
  • By sponsoring this year, you will be in excellent company with the current FOSS4G sponsors.

Sponsorship packages start at $1,500, with benefits increasing at each level. For full details, see our sponsorship page. If you have any questions or thoughts on sponsorship or this year’s conference, please get in touch.

We look forward to great things in September, and hope you will be able to join us.

After you register for FOSS4G and as you make your plans to join us in Portland, Oregon this September 8th – 13th, you might be wondering what other exciting things you can do while in PDX…

PostgreSQL Day

Join the Portland Postgres Users Group  (PDXPUG) for PostgreSQL Day on September 6th, the Saturday before FOSS4G. Attendance is free, but an RSVP is required (RSVP here). PostgreSQL Day is hosted by Portland State University and PDXPUG.

Code Sprint

The annual FOSS4G Code Sprint is on Saturday Sept 13th at the Eliot Center.  More details at the wiki.  The industrious GeoServer team is continuing the sprint on Sunday.

WhereCampPDX

If you are lingering in PDX after FOSS4G, and need a place to put your creative thoughts into action, drop by WhereCampPDX and share them with other friendly geo-nerds.  WhereCamps are unconferences that aim to connect geo-enthusiasts, developers, social place hackers, artists, activists, grad students, geographers, earth scientists and anybody else who wants to “know their place”.  More details at website. (check back for updates).

Js.Geo

Js.Geo is officially happening during FOSS4G (for reals).  This one day conference brings together experts or people deeply interested in spending a full day digging into advanced topics in the Geospatial Javascript realm. We’ll convene for a series of curated talks from some leaders in  JS + GEO  and have plenty of time to explore ideas and concepts. The talks will also leave time for demos and questions and answer sessions

More details and speakers will be revealed as the event gets closer, but space is limited and we are already down to 80 tickets.  So book your spot.

LocationTech

After an evening of hor d’oeuvres in the exhibit hall, head over to the FOSS4G stop of the LocationTech Tour.

Additional guest tickets for Gala

The Gala Night at the World Forestry Center is included with regular conference registration.  If you would like to bring a guest, then you will need an additional ticket.  Note that single day and volunteer registrations do not include the Gala Night; you will need a ticket if you want to attend.  Gala Night tickets are available in the registration.

Field trips and tours

You travelled all the way to Portland so be sure to take some time to relax and explore our beautiful little corner of the world with one of our field trips or tours:

Sunday, Sept. 7th:

Friday, Sept. 12th:

Saturday, Sept. 13th:

Portland, Oregon, USA

Excitement builds as FOSS4G 2014 approaches! Join us in Portland, Oregon this September 8th – 13th.  Attending FOSS4G in Portland is a once in a lifetime opportunity.  FOSS4G is an incredible conference; 2013 was in Nottingham (UK) and 2015 will be in Seoul (South Korea), but this year, FOSS4G is right in your backyard in Portland, Oregon September 8th -13th!  Workshops are filling up — register [1] now to secure your seat in pre-conference workshops and your place at the conference.

Call for Maps!

Represent the beauty of the Pacific Northwest in map form in the Map Gallery.  We invite contributions to the FOSS4G Map Gallery to build an exciting and vibrant exhibit of the very best in mapping. This map gallery will not only demonstrate the work of delegates but also act as a reference point for the current state of mapping.  We encourage all delegates to share one example of their work and help us create a cartographic record of the FOSS4G 2014 conference.  Read the full call for maps [2] and enter your map [3].

Workshops and general sessions program

This year FOSS4G features more than 40 workshops [4], providing excellent training opportunities on relevant, leading technologies — and that’s all before the conference even begins.  With eight tracks [5] of sessions, plus invited talks and a great selection of Keynote Speakers, it will be a FOSS4G packed week to remember.

Keynote biographies

See exciting keyntoes by Mike Bostock of D3.js fame and the New York Times, Sarah Novotny of NGINX and a program chair for O’Reilly Media’s OSCON, and Al Shaw whose work at ProPublica has been honored with several awards.

After several visits, Bruce Momjian, a PostgreSQL core contributor, observed that Portland is different.  Wikipedia even has an entry to Keep Portland Weird.  Last weekend, Portland yet again had the highest participation of 100+ cities for the World Naked Bike Ride.  Final numbers aren’t available, but likely nearly 10,000 bicyclists rode through Portland to highlight the vulnerability of cyclists everywhere and decry society’s dependence on fossil fuels.

Oregon has public beaches largely due to Governor Tom McCall.  He is also well known for averting what was expected to be a large scale clash and protest by throwing the only state sponsored rock concert, Vortex I, attracting 50,000 attendees.  Although he was governor from 1967 to 1975 and died in 1983, based on bumper stickers, he still has an active political campaign.

What presentations do you want to see at FOSS4G?  Now is the time to tell us!

The FOSS4G community at large can now read and score potential presentations.  The conference committee will use the aggregate scores from the community review process to help choose which presentations to accept, and to assign presentations to appropriately sized rooms.

The community review process is an important part of creating a conference that benefits and reflects the community. Your input is a significant part of what makes FOSS4G a great conference. Note that you do not need to be registered for the conference to vote. And remember, all presentations will be available online, so even if you are unable to attend, your vote matters.

You can vote now at: http://community-review.foss4g.org.

Please complete your voting by May 5th.

Travel Grant Announcement

We realize that traveling to and attending a conference can be expensive, and that not everyone who uses or develops open source software has provided funding to pay their way or the means to pay for it themselves. To make sure that as many deserving people as possible can attend FOSS4G, we’re creating a travel grant program with funds to cover registration and travel costs. Watch for details coming soon.

What is PDX and more precisely, where is PDX?

In the most basic terms,

PDX == The airport code to the Portland, Oregon Airport

PDX == 45.5889, -122.5929

PDX == Portland, Oregon, USA (the City)

PDX == The catchment area of the PDX airport, which includes more than half of Oregon and some of Washington.

PDX == The domain name of Portland State University

Looking through the USGS Geographic Name Information System (GNIS), (import to PostGIS and run some queries) reveals that “Portland” is pervasive across the United States with an east and a west center.  “Portland” is not rare internationally either.

“PDX” on the other hand is rather unique.  You can visualize this in a workshop and demo from Boundless:

Boudless_Portland_heatmap

“PDX” is not just a location reference, it also references the ethos or the region.  As you hear more from PDX, you’ll start to sense this; after visiting, you’ll have experienced this and know it.  An example is that PDX likes a bird on everything, except the PDX airport.

PDX-birds

Why PDX?  Well, honestly, there are “other Portlands” and we don’t want any attendees to go to the wrong one.  “PDX” will guide you to beautiful Portland, Oregon and FOSS4G 2014.

Some fine print: “PDX” is not actually in the GNIS and the Boundless demo actually uses data from geonames.org, not the GNIS.
