Portland Timbers vs. San Jose Earthquakes (SOLD OUT)

Timbers_Army_crest_150 PortlandTimbers-logo_150

Europeans may think Americans don’t care about soccer, but that’s not true in the Pacific Northwest. Portland has adopted the moniker “Soccer City, USA“, and the evidence for that is strong. Since joining Major League Soccer in 2011, the Portland Timbers have sold out every single home game. The women’s professional team, the Portland Thorns, has the highest attendance of any professional women’s soccer team in the world, averaging some 13,000 attendees since their inaugural 2013 season. The Timbers’ supporters group, the Timbers Army has become famous for its passionate fans, and gigantic tifos. We’ve booked a number of seats in the general admission Timbers Army section. Grab a chant sheet, a craft beer, and join your fellow FOSS4G attendees to watch the Timbers take on the hated San Jose Earthquakes.

We will contact you with meet up and ticket pick-up details.

When: Sunday, September 7th, 2:00pm

Mount Saint Helens Trip (SOLD OUT)

Mount Saint Helens 1982

This field trip will be led by a local geologist and is designed to give you a hands-on experience of the power and scale of the 1980 eruption and it’s impact on the region’s industries, communities and ecosystem. Attendees will (weather permitting) view the 1980 crater and the new lava dome created during the 2004-2008 eruptive period, as well as the ecosystem’s recovery since the 1980 eruption.

The field trip will follow the Toutle River on the north side of the volcano’s 1980 eruption zone. Stops include the Mount Saint Helens Visitor Center and the Johnston Ridge Observatory to take in the exhibits and a couple of short videos; viewpoints to discuss the ecosystem’s recovery (we may see some beavers, raptors, and elk) and the local geology; and a 2.4-mile hike along the hummocks trail where you will walk on and touch giant pieces of the volcano that were transported 8 miles downstream during the 1980 eruption (and enjoy more ecosystem recovery and wildlife sightings).

The hummocks trail is rated as easy. The trip will be held rain or shine. Previous trip attendees have thoroughly enjoyed this trip in inclement conditions. In the event of soaking rains, the hummocks trail hike may be replaced with visits to additional interpretive centers.

What to Bring: A lunch, snacks, water, comfortable shoes to walk on the ash-covered, hilly hummocks trail, sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, and appropriate clothing for heat, cold, and rain.

The tour will depart around 9:00am and will be back in Portland around 6:00pm.
